Exams with Invigilation Features

Facial Comparison

Facial comparison is a way of identifying key features on a person's face and using it as a way to identify and differentiate between people. You will be met with a message if a flow has been set up with facial comparison.

When you enter a flow with facial comparison on, it will then be required to take a picture with either the integrated webcam on a laptop or by having an external webcam connected to the computer or laptop.

  1. Take Image: This is the button to press to take the image that will be used as a reference image on the first flow you are participating in that has facial comparison enabled. You can adjust the size of the window on your screen by using the dropdown menu to the left of it. On any further flows, you will need to take an image to make sure that your chosen webcam works.
  2. Choose Webcam: This dropdown menu becomes available should you have multiple webcams available to take the image with.

External webcams have to be plugged in before starting the flow, otherwise they will not register. External webcams should not be unplugged during the lockdown exam.

  3. Corner menu: By pressing this button, you get two different options:
    • You can either exit the browser on your own, or
    • you can skip the facial comparison process by having an invigilator use their password to allow you to skip.

After taking the photo, you will get the option to either retake the image or confirm this is the image you want to use. Doing so will add the face to an archive for facial comparison. Your very first image will be used as a reference to cross-examine all future images taken for future flows.

If multiple faces appear on a picture, facial comparison will make use of the largest face in the frame, which will almost always be the closest face as well, and match this to the reference picture.

Voice Detection

Voice detection is a way of using the microphone on your computer to capture audio during a lockdown exam. You will be met with a message if a flow has been set up with voice detection.

When you enter a flow with voice detection on, you can setup your microphone before you enter the lockdown exam.

External microphones have to be plugged in before starting the flow, otherwise they will not register. External microphones should not be unplugged during the lockdown exam.

  3. Ensure your microphone is working: You can determine that your microphone is working correctly when the bar is moving and turning green when you are speaking. You can then speak out your name and

  4. Confirm your set up. The button will only turn green when the microphone has picked up any sound.

When you are in the lockdown browser, a small camera and/or microphone icon will indicate that this flow is using invigilation features as facial recognition and/or voice detection. The system will capture images and/or audio in the background.
