Creating a Custom Rubric

A custom rubric is a set of questions that can clarify the assessment process for both assessors and participants, e.g. learning outcomes in coursework and exam situations. Rubrics support feedback from academics to students. In WISEflow a rubric is created by the author, used by the assessors in the assessment period, and shown to the participants on the flow after the end of the assessment period.

This article will go through how to create a custom rubric as well as show an example of a written assignment evaluation. Please refer to Publishing Assignments and Rubrics when you want to make a rubric available for use on a flow.

Creating a New Rubric

As an author, click on Rubrics on the overview page and then on New rubric New_rubric_Icon.png.


In the new pop-up window,


  1. Give your rubric a title (max. 50 characters),
  2. add a description (max. 500 characters),
  3. add tags,
  4. and click on Next to continue.

As a default, Standard rubric will be chosen. Click on Custom Rubric and then on Create to get started.


The newly created rubric will now show up at the top of your unpublished rubrics list.


As it is a new rubric, you have the following tools available to edit your new custom rubric.

  1. Edit the title, description and tags of the rubric.
  2. Copy the current version of the rubrics.
  3. Open a focused view which will only show the rubric you are currently working on in the tab.
  4. Delete the rubric (Hold to confirm).
  5. Add a rubric item (or more items through the content bank).
Add a Rubric Item

Please note that only custom rubrics constructed from MCQ or range-scoring questions can be completed when marking offline using WISEflow's offline marking functionality.

To further develop the custom rubric and add the actual content, click Add an Item.


From the drop-down menu, you have the option of adding a "quick and easy" standard multiple-choice question, creating a more customised question or adding an item / items from the content bank. For this guide, we will choose a standard multiple-choice question. Read the article on available question types and how to use the question editor for more information about creating custom questions.

When added, the custom rubric will include additional information and options, as seen below.


  1. Number of items in the rubric.
  2. Maximum amount of points for the rubric.
  3. Add grade scaler.
  4. Publish the custom rubric. After having added the first item, the rubric is technically ready to be published.
  5. Change the name of the item.
  6. Copy, add to the content bank or delete this item.
  7. Preview and edit the item.
  8. Toolbox, allowing you to:
    • Copy the question to the same item
    • If there are more than one question, remove the question from this item and add to a new item instead
    • Delete the question (An item must have at least one question.)
  9. Add additional content to the item. Including, simple or custom questions, questions from the content bank, a tool (e.g. calculator or ruler) or text section.

Using the Content Bank

The content bank has a lot of features to help you create, customise, and share rubrics. The content bank is a place to store all your rubrics for future use. You can import matrices from the content bank when creating rubrics and build matrices directly in the content bank.

The content bank can be found in the rubrics overview:


  1. Import or export items from / to JSON-file format.
  2. Filter or order your list of items.
  3. Number of questions in and maximum score of the item.
  4. All item are per default not shared with anybody. You can share your item either with specific authors or with all authors on the licence.
  5. Owner of the content. If an item was shared with you, the initials of the author will be shown in the circle.
  6. Preview ( Preview_Assignment_Icon.png) , edit, hide or delete the item (More_options_icon.png) .
  7. Expand to review, edit or delete the questions in an item.
  8. Bulk action for all or selected items: hide, remove the sharing, share with selected users, share with all users on the licence or delete matrices.

Click New custom rubric item to create a new custom rubric item in your content bank.



Structured Feedback Format

The way rubrics is used in this example is as a structured feedback format. Thereby not letting the academic or teacher give points or score the individual student, but making the assessor give written feedback in an open-ended fashion with access to various formatting tools. In this example, the assessor is limited to give 500 words per feedback action and can use various basic tools to structure the feedback.

You can import the example rubric here as a JSON file. You can import the file to WISEflow and add it to your own rubrics. The file cannot be imported in the content bank!
